Spigot - Old Faithful

Spigot - Old Faithful • this painting is sold

This is my Parent's outside spigot. It was original with their home which was built in 1953. There is a hint of the original red paint on the valve which had a familiar squeak to it when turning the water on. Yesterday, out of necessity, my Father had the spigot replaced. I asked if we could keep the old spigot and after I've completed this painting, maybe we'd place it in the garden, not only as a sculptural piece, but also as a sweet reminder of 54 years of faithful service.

It's funny how you become sentimental about things. Becoming resistant to change. Reminiscing about simpler times. ... and becoming nostalgic about something as common and disposable as an old spigot. Thanks old friend ...

Antique Clock

Antique Clock • this painting is sold

The clock of life is wound but once,
And no man has the power
To tell just when the hands will stop
At late or early hour.

To lose one's wealth is sad indeed,
To lose one's health is more,
To lose one's soul is such a loss
That no man can restore.

The present only is our own,
So Live, Love, toil with a will --
Place no faith in 'Tomorrow' --
For the clock may then be still.

Poppies

Poppies • this painting is sold

Yesterday there were only two blooms on the Poppy bush ... today there are seven. My Mother's Mother had Poppies growing in her small, but pretty yard on Green St. Now, many years later, Poppies from the same seeds are growing in my Parents' garden. They're so delicate that they somehow look surreal. Almost like orange Papier Mache.

The garden is beautiful this year. Lavender and pansies, geraniums and ageratums, pocketbook plants ... and daisies and fuschias ... my Mother's favorites. Cherry tomatoes and big boy tomatoes, peppers and basil, mint and oregano and thyme and rosemary.

Ahhh ... enjoy your garden ... I just wish that my Mom could be home to enjoy it, too.

The Cuckoo Clock

The Cuckoo Clock

I was fortunate to live in Cape May, NJ for six years. My apartment on Washington Street was small, but it was situated in the back of a large lawn graced with old trees and my vegetable garden. There, happy memories were made of long lazy days lying on the sand or strolling along the quiet streets.

Although my main occupation was working at the Mad Batter Restaurant, I also held a job in a quaint antique shop entitled 'Midsummer Nights Dream'. I collected all sorts of things including old furniture, old framed prints, antique beer steins for my Father and old cuckoo clocks. I always had a fondness for them since one graced our living room at home. Every day, since sixty years, my Father winds the old cuckoo clock, a present from his friend returning home from the great war.

Three years ago, while exhibiting my paintings in Germany, I had the pleasure of traveling the winding Cuckoo Clock Road in the enchanted Black Forest. It was as beckoning and bewitching as a Grimm Brothers' fairy tale.

"And hear the pleasant cuckoo, loud and long -
The simple bird that thinks two notes a song"

Stethoscope and the Beating Heart

Stethoscope and the Beating Heart • this painting is sold

Older age is highly overrated as some would say. There's a chance to lose the person we recognize as ourself. Your life as you know it, your social skills, your body control ... and even your thoughts. So what lures someone to take on the challenges of care for the older person? Is it money or job availability or even by chance? For any reason or in any case, there's a common thread entwined in each and every one of the caretakers that I have come to know at Phoebe Ministries. Certainly, it's a dynamic mixture of respect for humanity and health and common decency ... but what I see linked throughout each person that touches our new family life is kindness. The 'hello, how are you?' each morning, the becoming familiar and seeing 'staff' as 'friend', the observation of tenderness, the sharing of grief.

So, please know how much you are appreciated. Thank you Cathy and Sharlee and Judy and Rosa and Melinda and Mercedas and Diane and Carol and Karla (I miss you) and Jenny and Pearl and Rosa and Joe and Jackie and Michelle and Linda and Donna and Noah and .....

African Violets IV

African Violets IV • this painting is sold

The Violet

Down in a green and shady bed,
A modest violet grew;
Its stalk was bent, it hung its head
As if to hide from view.
And yet it was a lovely flower,
Its colour bright and fair;
It might have graced a rosy bower,
Instead of hiding there.

Yet this it was content to bloom.
In modest tints arrayed;
And there diffused a sweet perfume,
Within the silent shade.

Then let me to the valley go
This pretty flower to see;
That I may also learn to grow
in sweet humility.

Lemons

Lemons • this painting is sold

My friend and I are in business together designing signs and awnings for a nearby town. I believe we are designing the signs and awnings for a total of 13 businesses. It's a pretty big job. The great thing is that all of the businesses are so varied ... so from a design perspective, it's extremely interesting. Included are law offices, a gift shop, karate studio, spaghetti inn, barber shop, children's clothing store, Ice cream parlor, hobby store, Chinese restaurant, bridal shop, construction building, photographer's studio and a cute little seafood shop.

After a great evening wrapping up a lot of work, my friend and business partner grilled a wonderful dinner of burgers and jumbo shrimp with a side of red leafy salad. One glass of wine and an Amstel light later and I'm ready to hit the hay. These lemons were sliced and squeezed over our shrimp purchased from the cute little seafood shop ....

Off to dream ...

David's Iris

David's Iris

Well, I enjoyed a delicious dinner tonight at my friend David's house. We had turkey-chicken 'hamburgers' mixed with sun dried tomatoes and Italian cheese. David cooked them on the grill ... Mmmm ... perfection ... just the way I like it ... a little crispy yet still holding the juice. They were incredible!

We had a beautiful salad tossed with red leaf lettuce, onions, green peppers, portobellos and Caesar dressing.

I brought a bottle of Casillero del Diablo Cabernet. It's wonderfully full bodied, oaky and very lush. We dined on the patio overlooking the yard and garden. Ahhh ... How wonderful to have great friends ... that 'dine', have great conversation, are funny, have appreciation for beauty ... and most of all that you love them so much ... and, are lucky enough that they love you so much in return.

Thanks for the beautiful Iris, Dave .... and thank you too, Spotty (his Dalmation) that trampled on and broke the stem of the Iris so that I would be able to take it home to paint it for my Painting Each Day project.

Apple Soap

Apple Soap

Is there anything as relaxing, as soothing, as stress-relieving ... and as enjoyable as a warm bath in a beautiful deep porcelain tub. Add the hanging twinkling lights, a candle or two, the soundtrack of 'Something's Gotta Give', a glass of Cabernet and you have a perfect 'me' moment. Bathwise that is.

Well, a treat for me is happening upon a beautiful soap. A while back I found a lovely boxed set of four triple milled Apple Soaps. There were old fashioned apple prints gracing the outer box with a delicate ribbon 'button' and an elastic hoop keeping the box secure. Each of the four soaps were neatly nestled inside in their own apple decorated box. Oh the fragrance!! It swirls throughout your senses and for that one moment, takes you to a place of pure olfactory bliss.

Pepper and Salt

Pepper and Salt

Well, in keeping with the spirit of painting salt and pepper items, I decided to paint my own salt and pepper shakers. I always thought they were magpies for some reason. They sit on the upper shelf of my stove and I've had them and loved them for years and years. However, not only do I have salt and pepper, but I'm lucky to also have 'cloves', 'cinnamon', 'nutmeg' and 'allspice'. A little magpie spice family.

One can only imagine the journey that these six little magpies had before reaching their home in my home.

Salt and Pepper

Salt and Pepper

My friend Deb went on vacation to Florida for 10 days. And kindly, she offered to bring something back for me to paint for my Painting Each Day project.

Well, Deb arrived at the time-share in Florida to find out that the kitchen had been stripped down ... no pots and pans ... and the salt and pepper shakers were filled with little restaurant packets instead of the traditional salt and pepper. So after laughing at the sight of these shakers, she decided that this was what she would bring back for me to paint.

So thanks Deb ... I can't wait to see what you'll bring back next!

Finding Nemo PEZ

Finding Nemo PEZ • this painting is sold

The greatest animation of our time is 'Finding Nemo'. Gosh that's an incredible film. It took four years of intense work to reach completion. And, if you've never seen Finding Nemo, you're in for a real treat. Ellen is perfect as Dory. And you'd be hard pressed to find a better actor for Marlin than Albert Brooks.

The story has everything. Under water beauty. Suspense. Humor. Compassion. Love.

My great friend Dave surprised me with this 'Finding Nemo PEZ' today. Now he's a little reluctant to admit how incredible the film 'Finding Nemo' is, but get this ... Dave even has an aquarium in his living room. You're not foolin' me, Dave! You love that film as much as I do!

And don't forget to watch 'The Making of Finding Nemo' ... it's as captivating as the film itself.

Thanks again for the PEZ dispenser Dave ... maybe it could find a good home in your aquarium?!

Fred's Fender

Fred's Fender • this painting is sold

Happy Birthday Fred !!

What a surprise it was! Randa, Fred's wonderful wife and my dear friend, had me come over in secret to photograph Fred's coveted Fender Bass guitar. So .... I snuck over, we opened what we thought was his bass ... and I photographed away. Well, I actually own one six string guitar, a Suzuki 3 special 12 string guitar and an electric Fender Stratocaster. But, with the hurried sneakiness, opening and shutting the case and making sure that the strap was in the exact same position so he would never suspect ... I never stopped to think that I actually photographed his six string guitar and not his prized bass.

So ... anyway ... Happy Birthday Fred! I will paint your bass, and this time Randa and I won't have to sneak ... and it was a lovely and very special dinner party in your beautiful garden. You are such dear friends of mine. You are loved! What a great evening ... Now that's what great memories are made of.

Garlic II

Garlic II • this painting is sold

I'm sitting in my home office ... the breeze is streaming through my window, the view is of the distant mountain and the trees in the foreground are swaying in the wind. We're having a beautiful Spring in the Northeast. Weather in the 60s and 70s ... Perfect temperature to light up my stove-top grill and and throw on some garlic and vegetables. Nothin' better than grilled veggies tossed with pasta and olive oil. Maybe a glass of Cabernet is in order. Mmmm ... that gets my vote.

Speaking of voting .... it's the Primary Election Day!

Did I mention that my eight year old Parakeet 'Lily' wasn't dying at all ... she was pregnant and yesterday she laid an egg!!! Her first one! The day after Mother's Day ... and eight years old. A perfect little pink unfertilized egg. I ran out and bought her a nesting box. Maybe there's still hope for me!!

See you at the Voting Booth!

Gerbera Daisy

Gerbera Daisies • this painting is sold

My Mother's favorite flower is the Daisy. Specifically the 'Shasta' Daisy. Although there's the Montauk Daisy the Daisy Mum and the Gerbera Daisy ... to name a few. For my Mother I painted the Bleeding Hearts painting and cut her a beautiful bouquet of flowers all from the garden of her home. The clear glass vase was filled with purple and white lilacs, pink geraniums, french lavender, yellow pocketbook flowers, pink field daisies, poppy stems, peonies and bleeding hearts. The whole room was aromatic.

I'll plant the Gerbera Daisy in her garden in the back yard, along with the white daisy mums from Susan and the blue 'forget-me-nots' from Karen.

Mother's Day • Bleeding Hearts

Gazebo at Phoebe Ministries

Mother's Day • Bleeding Hearts

Tomorrow is Mother's Day. What do you give the woman who bore you, raised you and loved you for 46 years? This is the first Mother's Day that my Mother will not celebrate the day in her home. She now resides at Phoebe Ministries. Phoebe Ministries is a care facility located in a beautiful stone mansion sharing the grounds with lovely gardens, a gazebo, a bandshell and several porches overlooking the picturesque landscape. My Mother's room has two large windows and she can see the pink dogwoods in blossom. Ethel, the resident cat, has found comfort lying on my Mother's bed and windowsill.

We always had a 'Bleeding Heart' bush in our backyard. Around Mother's Day, the crimson and pink 'hearts' are in blossom. Whenever I see these flowers, I always think of 'home'.

Happy Mother's Day Mom

I love you

Two Vine Ripened Tomatoes

Two Vine Ripened Tomatoes

Although it's still Spring, the tomatoes at the super market were luscious. I gathered up the meaty vine ripened and the cherry vine ripened safely stored in the red mesh bag. Also I studied the garlics for the perfect white and lavender hues. I selected the beautiful artichoke that sported a healthy stem with scales of deep green and purple leaves. I searched for the perfect avocados. Also, I grabbed two bags of healthy prewashed spring green lettuce mix.

There was a bit of a commotion at the checkout. The clerk didn't know that the artichoke was actually an artichoke. There was no skew bar and she claimed to never having seen this strange vegetable before. I assured her of its identity ... but she was skeptical and felt the need to question the other clerks as well as another clerk's mother waiting in line. Customer service was summoned ..

After checking out - and after all were in agreement about the artichoke, I grabbed my bag, shared a friendly laugh, said my thank you and met my brother and his girlfriend for dinner at the neighborhood restaurant.

Only until I got home and searched my bag did I realize that only the tomatoes and the artichoke were there. I ran down to my car .... no additional bag ... called the super market ... and yes, with all of the fussing about the artichoke, I failed to grab my other bag that still hung from the silver bag hangers. No problem to go back .. although ... will I still find those perfect avocados, the garlic with the white and lavender hues .. and the two bags of spring green lettuce mix with the furthest expiration date .... ?

Did I mention that the check out girl thought my garlics were onions?

Chutes and Ladders

Chutes and Ladders • this painting is sold

Chutes and Ladders is the game of rewards and consequences. As kids travel along the game path, they encounter situations that reward them for good deeds by letting them climb the ladders or punish them for misbehaving by sending them down chutes. All the while, they are learning to recognize numbers and count to 100.

Snakes and Ladders: The Western form of this game was invented in Victorian England, possibly by John Jaques of Jaques of London and was apparently adapted from the ancient Indian game "Dasapada", dating back to the 2nd century BC.

Lily and Harry

Lily and Harry (Lily is yellow, Harry is blue)

My beautiful under the roof garden

Lily and Harry

My apartment is located under the roof of a 100 year old school building. Hardwood floors, old kitchen cupboards, a clawfoot tub and beautiful large old school windows. The southern view of South Mountain changes every season, every day. It's is my beloved home for 22 years and I wake up every day pinching myself realizing how lucky I am to live here.

However, NO pets allowed - firm ... But ... I got the go ahead for little birds. So for eight years my Lily has lived here with me. One year ago, Harry joined her. Lily is shy and sweet and I can hold her and nuzzle her and kiss her. Although truthfully, she can't wait to get back into her large cage. Harry chirps and warbles all day long. He Never stops talking. They make a great pair. They're who I awaken to, share my home with and come home to every day.

My Spring Garden

Every Spring the ritual of creating my top floor garden is extremely gratifying. Rebirth, renewal and awakening. I plant a garden of wild flowers, herbs, vines and tomatoes .... I open the two walls of windows and let the cool air circulate with the aroma of green. The fountain trickles and the large Boston fern whirls in the breeze. The twinkling lights entwine with grape vines cascading from the rafters and the familiar squeak and slam of the wooden screen door is reminiscent of an old country farmhouse. The weather in the Northeast is just perfect. It's 70 degrees outside, the trees are in full blossom and tonight is the Banana Factory First Friday celebration.

If you'd like to receive my animated evites each month announcing First Friday and you're not yet on my email list, just let me know. I'd be happy to add you to the list. I never share email addresses and everything that I send out is BBC (blind carbon copy).

I have a sneaking suspicion that tonight will be a heavily attended event. The 29 artists' studios will be open for touring. We have children's art showcased in our two galleries ... there is beer, wine, soda and snacks to enjoy ... and live entertainment.

What better to do on a cool May evening than stroll down Third St. and enjoy Bethlehem's South Side First Friday.

Pink Geraniums for Bertie and Jim

Pink Geraniums for Bertie and Jim • this painting is sold

Hopefully in our lives we have the unbelievable luck to meet special people and form deep and lasting friendships. I have two friends that are very, very dear to me. Jim and Bertie Musselman. Jim Musselman was my high school art teacher almost 30 years ago. But he wasn't only an art teacher ... he was, and is, a life teacher. He recently celebrated his 92nd birthday and is as sharp and passionate and caring as ever. And I'm so lucky that he cares about me. Bertie, his wife and also a woman that I'm so proud to call 'friend', is kind and thoughtful and every bit as grand as Jim. And ... she's so pretty and sports the greatest pair of legs to boot!

My day was wheelchairs and VAST and hospital mixups and tears ... and then running from the nursing home to Arts Ovation. And there at table number one, were Jim and Bertie ... As wonderful and loving and thoughtful as ever. They're legendary in the Lehigh Valley. And I just can't even say how much they have steered my life. I have the unbelievable luck to call two such loving people 'friend'.

With the conclusion of Arts Ovation, Bertie came over and presented me with the beautiful large pink geranium centerpiece. I'm going to give it to my Mother from Jim and Bertie, but wanted to paint this little painting for them to say 'Thank You'.

My Mother's favorite flower is the daisy. So, I planted Shasta daisies along the side of their home ... along with red geraniums and periwinkle ageratums ... and, I'm thinking it must be the rabbits that also agree that daisies are their favorites, too. After painting yesterday's African Violets, I received other requests for flower paintings. Sons and Daughters and Husbands or Significant Others are looking forward to presenting their Mother - or Wife - or Partner with a pretty painting for Mother's Day.

My own Mother is now a resident in a nursing home. The nursing facility is a beautiful stone mansion divided into gathering rooms and resident rooms. She has a bed by a window that looks out to the garden. The pink dogwood tree is in bloom and squirrels are happily playing about. The resident cat, Ethel, visits my Mother every evening. She found a cozy place on my Mother's Valentine blanket and blue shawl that Grandma crocheted.

Love your Mother.
