Farina

Farina • this painting is sold

Well, today is my ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY of my Painting Each Day project. I'm sorry to say that I didn't quite reach my goal of one painting per day ... but I did manage to paint about 300 of them, along with several graphic design jobs including the poster for the HUDSON VALLEY WINE FESTIVAL and two pretty large paintings for St. Luke's Hospital. So all in all, it was a pretty good year .. painting wise that is.

I'm really happy that I took on this challenge ... and I'm not going to stop at one year. I enjoy painting in my beautiful dining room with the large windows looking south toward the mountain. I love hearing the gurgling of my fountain in the garden. There's a comfort here ... and with the passing of my Mother last month, I'm grateful that I can create my paintings in the solace of my home.

But one day soon, I'll pack my brushes and head back to my studio at the Banana Factory. I'll miss the light - I have no windows in my studio - and I'll miss the convenience of being at home ... but I think soon it might be time ... we'll see ...

Farina ... I never heard of this product before. It's kind of a crazy box ... but a new collector of my paintings sent me this in the mail asking me to paint it. A little more attention to detail and a final glaze and it should be done. Thanks!

Ornamental Peppers

Ornamental Peppers • this painting is sold

I love peppers. I love the colors, the textures, the leaves of deep green. It's a rarity when I don't add peppers to my dinners. Oh, and they're so pretty in a clay pot as the centerpiece of my table.

Once, while attending the Bowers' Pepper Festival - the largest chile pepper festival in the U.S. - I purchased some ornamental pepper plants ... well, I popped one of the peppers in my mouth while driving home on Rt. I-78 - my eyes started burning, my mouth was on fire and a scorching surge of pain and panic was coursing through my body. Well, it's been a few years .... so, I may just have to try that again.

If you're not attending the Hudson Valley Wine Festival, why not try Bowers' Pepper Festival.

It's great ... and you can have an icy cold beer at the Bowers' hotel afterwards.
Good luck getting a table!!!

Eggplant

Eggplant • this painting is sold

How to Stuff an Eggplant

For once, forget Bongo's Burger Joint
& thank El Nino for the pulsing hillsides.
Go to the farmer's market & choose
a glossy eggplant, just-harvested,
that shimmers back at you.
At home, rub its purple skin with dark oil
carried up from a cool cellar.
Broil the eggplant inches from the heat.
Carefully scoop the spongy white flesh,
leaving walls thick enough to hold.
Fill the hollow with walnuts, tangy feta,
& pomegranate seeds. Pack a basket.
Walk slowly along a trail winding
through wildflowers, a riot of color
down to the beach. Don't hurry.
Scatter the fat sparrows as you shake out
your picnic cloth stained with grass
from last summer. Place the eggplant,
warm & full, in the curve
of your lover's palm. Watch him
savor the soft succulent meat.
Dig your toes into the sand.
Let the mingled juices drip
onto the blanket while he nibbles.

Dinner With John

Here is my dining room. I made dinner for my brother John ... cajun catfish, red beans and rice, shrimp cocktail, Greek salad, pumpernickel bread ... and a couple of designer beers ... each.

I really love my apartment. It's been home for almost 22 years.
22 Years!!!! There are several rooms and each one is so beautiful ..
I love the 'bones' of my apartment. From my bathroom with the clawfoot tub, my music room with my circa 1934 baby grand piano, my antiques, my old fashioned kitchen ... my garden.

With my Mother passing away last month, I'm finding that I just long to stay home ... to cook, to watch movies, to garden, to clean, to paint ... to be still ... but very often ... just to cry.
I really miss my Mom.

B&M Baked Beans

B&M Baked Beans • this painting is sold

One of the rewards with the Painting Each Day project is the special connection that occurs when a person is moved by a painting. I originally painted this B&M Baked Beans painting back in January. It was really one of my favorites ... and then in June, I traded the painting for a beautiful carved Irish Rosary for my Mother. This painting reached another person because it reminded her of memories of her Mother and a happy childhood ... so I painted it again.

That special connection and sharing each other's story progenerates great joy for me ... and instills devotion to keep going with my Painting Each Day quest. My sincerest thanks to you ...

Radishes

Radishes • this painting is sold

“The beet is the most intense of vegetables. The radish, admittedly, is more feverish, but the fire of the radish is a cold fire, the fire of discontent, not of passion. Tomatoes are lusty enough, yet there runs through tomatoes an undercurrent of frivolity. Beets are deadly serious.”

Crown Royal

Crown Royal • this painting is sold

The production of Crown Royal began in 1939 coincident with the first Royal Tour of Canada by reigning monarch King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. To mark this historic occasion, Samuel Bronfman, President of the Seagram Company, decided to create a quality whisky to be packaged in a crown-shaped bottle and dressed in a distinctive royal purple bag. Like the packaging, the name chosen for the product was intended to reflect the quality of the spirit, a marketing concept that quickly caught consumer attention. It was available only in Canada until 1964.

Today, Crown Royal is produced solely at the Crown Royal distillery at Gimli, on the shores of Lake Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Daily production of Crown Royal uses 10,000 bushels of grain and requires 624,438 Imperial gallons (2,838,750 L/749,918 US gal) of water. The whisky produced at the Manitoba distillery is stored in 2 million barrels, stored in 46 warehouses, over 5 acres of land. 2006 sales of Crown Royal amounted to over US $500M.

The HUDSON VALLEY Wine and Food Festival

The Hudson Valley Wine & Food Festival

Well ... here it is ... the poster I designed for the wine fest. Obviously there is a wine glass representing wine ... but, also included in the poster is a reference to the beautiful Catskill Mountains, the Knigston-Rhinecliff bridge and the Hudson River.

This year the Hudson Valley Wine & Food Festival will be held at the Dutchess County Fairgrounds in Rhinebeck, NY. There will be over 50 wineries represented there, lots of great food, art, live bands ... and me -- signing your poster!!

It's such a beautiful area ... apple orchards, farm stands, rolling hills, the Hudson River and the picturesque Catskill Mountains.

Why not join us for a great weekend -- September 7th, 8th, 9th, 2007. Hoping to see YOU there!

Bagpipe Chanter

Bagpipe Chanter

After my Mother's church service, we opened the church doors and there was a lone bagpiper playing Danny Boy. The bagpiper was at the grave site when we arrived. And he played until the end - until our limousine drove down the gravel drive and he could see us no longer.

I've always loved the bagpipes. My studio is in Bethlehem, Pa - the home of the largest Celtic Festival in the United States. Each September we host 'Celtic Classic' ... each year we commence with the celtic parade including bagpiping bands, Scottish dancers, athletes, border collies ... and me, the 'banner chick' for the Bethlehem Bagpiping Band. It's wonderful to see the large hulking men in their kilts vying for a world record. It's great to sit on the bleachers with an English Ale in tow. It's wonderful to don the plaid for the first weekend of 'sweater weather'.

Dog Biscuits

Dog Biscuits • this painting is sold

I'm watching over the pets while my friends are away ... and one of the many, many pets is a beautiful Great Pyrenees doggie. She's fun and sweet and needs to be pet at ALL times. She's already chewed both of my socks and is very protective of them being her new 'toys'. There are birds and pond fish and aquarium fish and a cat. There are plants in nooks and crannies and gardens of flowers and vegetables. It's an active and wonderful household.

Oh, did I mention that I'm driving their very cool Jeep around. I'm even doin' the 'wave' to other Jeep drivers. It's a neat experience to live in a little glimpse of someone else's life ... at least for a while ... and then it's nice to return to your own life as well.

Pineapple

Pineapple • this painting is sold

My Mother chose many names for her Fox stuffed animal .... and one of them was Pineapple.

The Pineapple: In recent history, in larger, well-to-do homes, the dining room doors were kept closed to heighten visitors' suspense about the table being readied on the other side. At the appointed moment, and with the maximum amount of pomp and drama, the doors were flung open to reveal the evening's main event. Visitors confronted with pineapple-topped food displays felt particularly honored by a hostess who obviously spared no expense to ensure her guests' dining pleasure.

In this manner, the fruit which was the visual keystone of the feast naturally came to symbolize the high spirits of the social events themselves; the image of the pineapple coming to express the sense of welcome, good cheer, human warmth and family affection inherent to such gracious home gatherings.

Asparagus

Asparagus • this painting is sold

The Clean Plater

Some singers sing of ladies' eyes,
And some of ladies lips,
Refined ones praise their ladylike ways,
And course ones hymn their hips.
The Oxford Book of English Verse
Is lush with lyrics tender;
A poet, I guess, is more or less
Preoccupied with gender.
Yet I, though custom call me crude,
Prefer to sing in praise of food.
Food,
Yes, food,
Just any old kind of food.
Pheasant is pleasant, of course,
And terrapin, too, is tasty,
Lobster I freely endorse,
In pate or patty or pasty.
But there's nothing the matter with butter,
And nothing the matter with jam,
And the warmest greetings I utter
To the ham and the yam and the clam.
For they're food,
All food,
And I think very fondly of food.
Through I'm broody at times
When bothered by rhymes,
I brood
On food.
Some painters paint the sapphire sea,
And some the gathering storm.
Others portray young lambs at play,
But most, the female form.
“Twas trite in that primeval dawn
When painting got its start,
That a lady with her garments on
Is Life, but is she Art?
By undraped nymphs
I am not wooed;
I'd rather painters painted food.
Food,
Just food,
Just any old kind of food.
Go purloin a sirloin, my pet,
If you'd win a devotion incredible;
And asparagus tips vinaigrette,
Or anything else that is edible.
Bring salad or sausage or scrapple,
A berry or even a beet.
Bring an oyster, an egg, or an apple,
As long as it's something to eat.
If it's food,
It's food;
Never mind what kind of food.
When I ponder my mind
I consistently find
It is glued
On food.

Watermelon

Watermelon

Today was a day that I just couldn't think ... or stop thinking about my Mom ... when she was a young woman, getting married, picking the greatest guy ... and him picking her ... their early life together .. Mom being 'in the family way' and Dad building her a crib. He handcrafted everything ... there's not a person like him that I know ... or a woman like her .... a sad day ... miss her ... wishing that I could just call her and say 'I love you' one more time.

Orange Slices

Orange Slices

Ahhhh .... the sweet smell of a freshly peeled orange.

It's Sunday morning and I'm up early. The flowers are all watered in the garden and the fountain is gurgling away. The birds and cicadas have quieted down and the air is heating up.

I only have a couple channels on my tv and am very happy with just watching PBS. But, I'm house sitting for a couple weeks and am being spoiled by the vast selection. My favorite (besides PBS) is the food network. Ina Garten - the Barefoot Contessa - is my favorite cooking show. Not necessarily because her recipes are superior than the other chefs, but because it's the whole 'feel' of her show. Her beautiful home, the garden, East Hampton, the shoreline and her playful relationship with her husband. It's visually just a beautiful program.

So ....... yesterday arriving in the mail are my six new DVDs containing nine Barefoot Contessa episodes. It's great to have a wonderful cooking show playing while I paint. I just love the theme music for the Barefoot Contessa, but am having trouble locating information on the musicians .. and if the music can be found on CD?

Ahhhh .... you just gotta love that good livin' !!

Cook's Champagne

Cook's Champagne • this painting is sold

I know someone that enjoys drinking Champagne. Now, I'm not talking about Dom or Perrier Jouet or even Korbel. This woman loves Cook's Champagne. She purchased a painting from me of a champagne cork and one of a corkscrew ... and then we toasted with some 'Cook's Brut'. I thought of her when I opened this bottle.

It was opened in celebration of another person who turned 50 years old and is a breast cancer survivor. I shared a glass with her daughter. I'll tell ya, for the $6.99 it's not bad. Not bad at all. Cheers!

Lemon

Lemon • this painting is reserved

What to paint ... what to paint ... Well -- I had this lemon in my fridge and thought ... yep, that's a good model. I've been busy designing the 'HUDSON VALLEY WINE AND FOOD FESTIVAL' poster for this year's wine festival. It's their first poster ... so, naturally I wanted it to be just right. That's how I am with all of my graphic design work ... focusing on my concept of perfection.

Now, I won't reveal the poster until it's okay'd by the ones in charge.
And I'll be at the festival signing them ... September 7th, 8th 9th. It's a great event ... and the group putting on the event is wonderful. Such good people. And, I'm staying in the cutest old Inn ... my room last year had a quilt on the bed, lace curtains, a small refrigerator ... and a deli and beer distributor across the street. That's it. That and a windy road in the country. How great is that!

So .. I really managed to get a lot of work done today. My Mother's memorial was on Tuesday and up until then I really couldn't focus on all of this ... but today was a good work day. I'm pretty pleased with the poster.
