Brer Rabbit

Brer Rabbit

"Of course, Brer Fox wanted to get Brer Rabbit as bad as he could, so he caught him by the behind legs and slung him right in the middle of the briar patch. There was a considerable flutter when Brer Rabbit struck the bushes, and Brer Fox hung around to see what was going to happen.

By and by he heard someone call his name and 'way up on the hill he saw Brer Rabbit sitting cross-legged on a chinquapin log combing the tar pitch out of his hair with a chip. Then Brer Fox knew he had been tricked.

Brer Rabbit hollered out, "Born and bred in the briar patch. I was born and bred in the briar patch!" And with that he skipped out just as lively as a cricket in the embers of a fire."

An excerpt from 'Brer Rabbit and the Tar Baby' from the Uncle Remus stories

Snowflake

Snowflake • this painting is sold

The story begins up in a cloud, when a minute cloud droplet first freezes into a tiny particle of ice. As water vapor starts condensing on its surface, the ice particle quickly develops facets, thus becoming a small hexagonal prism. For a while it keeps this simple faceted shape as it grows.

As the crystal becomes larger, however, branches begin to sprout from the six corners of the hexagon (this is the third stage in the diagram at right). Since the atmospheric conditions (e. g. temperature and humidity) are nearly constant across the small crystal, the six budding arms all grow out at roughly the same rate.
While it grows, the crystal is blown to and fro inside the clouds, so the temperature it sees changes randomly with time. But the crystal growth depends strongly on temperature (as is seen in the morphology diagram). Thus the six arms of the snow crystal each change their growth with time. And because all six arms see the same conditions at the same times, they all grow about the same way.

The end result is a complex, branched structure that is also six-fold symmetric. And note also that since snow crystals all follow slightly different paths through the clouds, individual crystals all tend to all look different.

Pete's Hot Dogs

Pete's Hot Dogs • this painting is sold

Well, doesn't every town have their favorite hot dog joint. In Allentown where I live it's hands down 'Yocco's Hot Dogs'. One small bite and they practically melt in your mouth. I like mine with Yocco's special sauce and onions and some mustard. Their fries and pierogies are hot and steamy with fluffy potato filling and a crispy bite. Hmmm HMMM !!!!

But, in Bethlehem where my studio is, I hear that Pete's is the front runner, so I decided to stop by. I ordered the number two special which is two chili dogs with onions and mustard, a serving of three pierogies and a small diet Pepsi (I usually order Diet Coke).

It was delicious !! I ate one, and painted the other. Then I ate the other one as well. The pierogies were nice and hot and even the diet Pepsi was refreshing. The server at Pete's was friendly and polite and I certainly would stop in again for an order to go!

My Studio

The Daily Painters artists have elected today as the day to show the spaces in which they work. I am so happy to be in my beautiful new studio. I have been with the Banana Factory since May 15th, 1999 and only since October have I moved into a studio with beautiful North Light windows.

It's an amazing place to work. Also, it's a beautiful studio in which to welcome friends and art lovers. So, if you haven't been by to take a look, please mark it on your calendar for January's First Friday - January 4th from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

I look forward to seeing YOU there !!!

Christmas Balls II

Christmas Balls II • this painting is sold

Well, I didn't really 'take' the last few days off ... it was more like I was under the weather. We had snow, I'd shovel .... then the cold and coughs set in ... then yesterday we had snow and ice, I'd shovel .... then the cold and coughs set in. So ... nothing better for when you're not feeling well, then to snuggle under the covers with sweet Gretel and watch the complete Tolkein trilogy on tv. All 10 hours of it.

Sweet little Gretel, my Father's little kitty, our relationship is a little like Pepe LePue and the black cat. I just can't stop hugging her and spoiling her with kisses. I always know when she's had enough because her eyes become large and they dart around searching for an escape route. Sometimes she sleeps in my arms with her little paw on my cheek. Ahhh .... amore.

Nutcracker 3

Nutcracker 3 • this painting is sold

I don't know what it is about these Nutcrackers, but they're fun to paint. They were initially carved with these stern faces to poke fun at the town officials in old Germany. Now, they're a staple in our Christmas decorating.

Very icy and snowy and rainy today. I left Christkindlmarkt early to visit my Dad. Yesterday we took Gretel (his beautiful adopted kitty) into the hospital to visit. She was dressed up in a red collar with white fur and gold bells, a Christmas Santa cloak, her Santa hat and a fun hat with reindeer antlers that lit up. She sat there all afternoon with her outfit on and was the sweetest little Angel. She was so happy to see my Dad. Two sweet souls.

Well, another vendor item from Christkindlmarkt. This beer stein is from our Katie Wolfhart area. When I bring in my camera I'll be sure to take pictures so you can see how beautiful Christkindlmarkt is this year.

I really enjoyed these wine stoppers. It's worth opening a bottle of wine just to put these to good use! They're really fun and make great Christmas presents.

This little guy was so cute AND he animates. Just pull down the lever on his back and he raises the spoon which he is holding. They're great little Christmas presents.

This is just one of the many, and I mean many, little wine stoppers that the German Cuckoo Clock booth has at Christkindlmarkt!

Peanut Butter Cookies

Peanut Butter Cookies

Well ... you're probably thinking 'what's the deal with the cookies' ... so here it is. I'm at Christkindlmarkt ALL day long. So, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday I stand there for 10 hours - the other days a little less but it's still a wonderful time opportunity to create my paintings. Instead of bringing my own 'models' in to Christkindlmarkt, I can borrow my models from the other vendors and then return them after they are painted
- well, in the case of the cookies I purchased them. The cookies were a variety pack - I ate the oatmeal raisin before I had a chance to paint them! I'm not really a sweets eater, but they were gooo-ooo-oood!!

So, get ready to see the wine stoppers, the nutcracker, the beer stein etc. And if you happen to be in the Christmas city of Bethlehem, PA, please, by all means stop by and say hello! Maybe I'll be painting the wine bottles that day and we can share a glass or two!

Chocolate Chip Cookies

Chocolate Chip Cookies

My Mother called her Chocolate Chip cookies 'Toll House'. I'm not sure why, but I'll have to check up on the meaning via Google.

We baked Toll House and Moons and Thumbprints with Jelly. After they came out from the oven, we'd bend the baking sheets and pop the cookies onto a brown paper bag that had been cut open to enlarge it. Oh .... how the house would fill with the aroma of cookies.

Those were the very sweet days of Christmas.

St. Nicholas Day

St. Nicholas Day

When we were little, we would hang our Christmas Stockings in the living room .... St. Nicholas would arrive and fill them with oranges and walnuts and little chocolates. It's an old German custom to signal the arrival of the Christmas season.

To this day, my sister and I leave a package at each other's door, but we each think it's from St. Nicholas .... Shhhhhh .....

Happy St. Nicholas Day to Everyone !!

The Candy Salesman

The Candy Salesman • this painting is sold

We grew up in a great era. Board games and family dinners .. Moms stayed home, cleaned, cooked and wore aprons. You could smell supper on the stove or cookies in the oven. Dads worked outside the house and on weekends families would take long drives through the countryside. There was little tv, but sometimes, as a treat, we would roll the tv stand into the living room and eat our dinner on snack trays while enjoying The Wonderful World of Disney at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday evenings.

We ate ribbon candy and dots and wax lips and candy cigarettes. We played at the park up the street and participated in Romper Day at the Fairgrounds. We went to Ocean City NJ for one weekend each year where all of us slept in just two rooms. We picnicked with our dozens of cousins and aunts and uncles.

My Parents would put up the Christmas tree after we all were fast asleep on Christmas eve ... and in the wee hours of the morning, we'd tiptoe down the stairs, turn the corner, and see the beautiful tree all lit up with colored lights. Santa had come ....

We grew up in a great era.

Jose Madrid Roasted Garlic and Olive Salsa

Jose Madrid Roasted Garlic and Olive Salsa • this painting is sold

I'm lucky to have a good location at Christkindlmarkt. In front of my booth is the Käthe Wolfhart display. There's a large carousel type center booth with ornaments and nativity scenes, and framing the exterior of the Käthe Wolfhart shopping area are large glass windows with every type of ornament and smokers, nutcrackers and candles, candies and chocolates, beer steins and table linens that you can imagine. Flanking the entrance to the Christmas shop are two large nutcrackers. Many children, lovers, grandparents and even pets pose before them to have their Christmas photo taken.

Next to my booth is the Jose Madrid Salsa booth. They do a booming business. They have very tasty products and the salsas are a great 'cash and carry' item. That is, if you're not in the market for cocktail prints, cocktail aprons and Painting Each Day paintings from my booth. Hey, why not treat yourself to both!!

Nutcracker

Nutcracker • this painting is sold

Wooden carvings of a soldier, knight, king, or other profession have existed since at least the 15th century. These nutcrackers portray a person with a large mouth which the operator opens by lifting a lever in the back of the figurine. Originally one could insert a nut in the big-toothed mouth, press down and thereby crack the nut. Modern nutcrackers in this style serve mostly for decoration, mainly at Christmas time. The carving of nutcrackers—as well as of religious figures and of cribs—developed as a cottage industry in forested rural areas of Germany. The most famous nutcracker carvings come from Sonneberg in Thuringia (also a center of dollmaking) and from the Ore Mountains. Wood-carving usually provided the only income for the people living there. Today the travel industry supplements their income by bringing visitors to the remote areas.

Carvings by famous names like Junghanel, Klaus Mertens, Karl, Olaf Kolbe, Petersen, Christian Ulbricht and especially the Steinbach nutcrackers have become collectors' items.

Crown Royal 3

Crown Royal 3 • this painting is sold

Crown Royal is a blended Canadian whisky, 40% alcohol by volume, 80 proof. The brand is currently owned by Diageo who purchased it when the Seagram portfolio was dissolved in the year 2000. It is the number one selling Canadian Whisky in North America.

The production of Crown Royal began in 1939 coincident with the first Royal Tour of Canada by reigning monarchs King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. To mark this historic occasion, Samuel Bronfman, President of the Seagram Company, decided to create a quality whisky to be packaged in a crown-shaped bottle and dressed in a distinctive royal purple bag.

Like the packaging, the name chosen for the product was intended to reflect the quality of the spirit, a marketing concept that quickly caught consumer attention.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Extra Virgin Olive Oil • this painting is sold

Ok, so I didn't really sell anything at Christkindlmarkt today, but, I did have wonderful bread dipped in extra virgin olive oil with herbs and grated cheese. And, since I didn't prepare a model, I chose to paint the Filippo Berio Extra Virgin Olive Oil that I was tasting.

Praying that tomorrow will be a better day. Even though the forecast is snow and sleet and rain and cold.
