Monopoly

Monopoly

It was 1934, the height of the Great Depression, when Charles B. Darrow of Germantown, Pennsylvania, showed what he called the MONOPOLY game to the executives at Parker Brothers. Can you believe it, they rejected the game due to "52 design errors"! But Mr. Darrow wasn't daunted. Like many other Americans, he was unemployed at the time, and the game's exciting promise of fame and fortune inspired him to produce the game on his own. With help from a friend who was a printer, Mr. Darrow sold 5,000 handmade sets of the MONOPOLY game to a Philadelphia department store. People loved the game! But as demand for the game grew, he couldn't keep up with all the orders and came back to talk to Parker Brothers again. The rest, as they say, is history! In its first year, 1935, the MONOPOLY game was the best-selling game in America. And over its 65-year history, an estimated 500 million people have played the game of MONOPOLY!

Painting Each Day • the back of the painting

The back of the painting ... notice the back staples

The side of the stretched canvas. It's already to hang !! I just use two level push pins pushed into the wall and Voila !

The other day I received an email from a possible patron questioning just exactly what she would be getting with a Painting Each Day painting. She questioned the canvas, the stretching, the position of the staples .... if it was stretched over wood etc.

So .... happy to oblige, I emailed her these photos. So ... if you are interested in bringing a Painting Each Day painting into your home, the canvas will be gessoed, stretched over a kiln-dried frame and stapled only in the back. It's ready to hang and enjoy it's new life in your home.

Thank you everyone for all of your art support -- I appreciate it !!!

Luxury Tax • Monopoly

Luxury Tax • Monopoly

Isn't it strange to have the words 'Luxury' and 'Tax' together in a saying. Luxury Tax. Certainly there isn't anything luxurious about taxes ... just ask my accountant. I don't know if she ever experienced someone crying when they received their completed tax forms ... until this year. Just ask her. That poor woman ... what does someone do when they hand over the completed paperwork and the recipient begins to weep ... well, I can tell ya. You cry a little, worry a lot ... and then rely on the kindness of your patrons and pray for a miracle.

Thanks KWR ... I can't tell you what your kindness meant to me ...

Daisies II

Daisies II • this painting is sold

Today I am editing the menu for my Niece and her husband Adam's Mexican Restaurant - 'Cactus Blue'. Cactus Blue is a wonderfully cozy and friendly find in Bethlehem, PA. Adam is a masterful chef. He's a natural and can effortlessly - or so it seams - whip up a gourmet dinner right before your eyes. Did I mention that Cactus Blue won every 'Best of the Lehigh Valley - Best Mexican Restaurant' award since they opened - AND the 'Decadent Dish' award from Style Magazine. Pretty remarkable stuff, eh?

Because of great demand, Cactus Blue is expanding and will celebrate the opening of their new addition this week -- just in time for Cinco de Mayo ! So ... if I might suggest, make reservations soon - they're always packed. It's BYO as well so start mixing up the Margaritas and icing the Cerveza !

Daisies

Daisies • this painting is sold

Today South Bethlehem celebrated 'Spring on 4th, What's on 3rd'. It marks the beginning of beautiful weather ... AND ... elevates the fun with the annual Chili cook-off. You buy tickets - 1 for a dollar, 6 tickets for $5.00 - and stroll around South Bethlehem purchasing and tasting the dozens of chili recipes. Banana Factory, where my studio is located featured two extremely wonderful chili batches. The meaty and spicy 'Chocolate and Habanero Chili' and the sweet and delicious 'Banana, Coconut and Nut Chili'. Both winners in my book.

I was somewhat disappointed that more visitors didn't venture to the Banana Factory 2nd floor, but I was happy to sell three Painting Each Day paintings to a longtime Musikfest volunteer. In fact, she purchased both paintings that I happened to paint today !

Daisies were my Mother's favorite flower. Simple and lovely, pure and pretty ... just like Mom.

Musikfest Mug

Musikfest Mug • not a Painting Each Day painting

I know this might not look like much in the present state .... but, picture it wrapped around a Musikfest stoneware drinking vessel. Hopefully, it will look much better ... especially after a draft or two. I was the Musikfest 20th Anniversary artist and now, for the 25th Anniversary, Musikfest asked me to create the painting that will wrap around the ceramic collectible mug. It's a take on the original Musikfest 1984 poster designed by Jim Musselman.

So ... this is it. When it's all printed and finished, I will take another photo of the completed mug just to give you an idea of what it will look like. So ... cheers to you, Jim -- I'll see that you get a stoneware mug to celebrate your original artwork. It's a keeper ... and the 1984 poster hangs proudly in my Parent's home. Like you, It's the classic.

Comics

Comics • this painting is sold

Snoopy, while born on October 2nd, first made his appearance on the strip on October 4, 1950, two days after the strip premiered and was identified by name on November 10. Schulz was originally going to call him "Sniffy" (as described in 25th anniversary book), until he discovered that name was used in a different comic strip. He changed it to "Snoopy" after remembering that his late mother Dena Schulz had commented that if their family were ever to acquire a third dog, it should be called Snoopi. In earlier strips it is not clear who Snoopy belongs to; for instance in the February 2, 1951 strip, Charlie Brown accuses Snoopy of following him, only to be told by Patty that Snoopy isn't following Charlie Brown but merely lives in the same direction. Indeed many early strips show Snoopy interacting with Shermy and Patty without Charlie Brown, making Snoopy appear to belong to all of the neighborhood kids, similar to the dog Pete in the Our Gang comedies, who is everyone's dog.

Snoopy was a silent character for the first two years of his existence, but on May 27, 1952 he verbalized his thoughts to readers for the first time via a thought balloon; Schulz would utilize this device for nearly all of the character's appearances in the strip thereafter. In addition to Snoopy's ability to "speak" his thoughts to the reader, many of the human characters in Peanuts have the uncanny knack of reading his thoughts and responding to them. In the animated Peanuts films and television specials, Snoopy's thoughts are not verbalized; his moods are instead conveyed through growls, sobs, laughter, etc., as well as through pantomime and foreign languages.

Oddly enough, the first time a beagle is mentioned in the strip (December 5, 1960), Snoopy denied being one. As Snoopy dozed, Charlie Brown paraphrased Gertrude Stein: "Beagles on the grass, alas." To this, Snoopy replied, "I am not a beagle."(Years later, Snoopy would paraphrase the Stein expression himself: "Birds in the grass, alas; beagle on the roof, aloof."

The Cameo

The Cameo • this painting is sold

You'll always remember your wonderful Teachers. A student would be fortunate to have three or four that really stand out. I was lucky to have two great art educators. Not only art educators, but life teachers .... and still, many years later, respected friends.

Mrs. Kelley was my grade school art teacher. A kinder and sweeter woman would be challenging to find. She's a real gem. She loves art, loves great music, and is a caring Mother, Grandmother, Wife and Friend.

This Cameo was her Mother's. What a nice tribute to ask that it be painted.

Thank you Mrs. Kelley for being so special. I'm so lucky to know you.

Forsythia

This is yet another painting for the 'In Bloom' exhibition at Monsoon Gallery in Bethlehem, PA. I will have approximately seven to ten paintings for the show. This painting measures 30" x 24" and is acrylic on stretched canvas.

I always loved the blooming of the Forsythia ... the sign of spring ... of renewal ...

... For those of you waiting for my 'Painting Each Day' paintings to resume, not to worry ! I've been working on a painting for the ceramic 'Musikfest' mug and the deadline is tomorrow. After that, I should be back in swing. Cheers !

Sunflowers

Sunflowers

This painting is not part of my 'Painting Each Day' quest. The painting itself measures 24" x 20" and it is an acrylic painting on stretched canvas. The frame I purchased in an antique shop in the lovely Brandywine area of Pennsylvania -- home of the Wyeth family.

I'm one of three artists featured in an upcoming exhibition entitled 'In Bloom'. The exhibition of floral paintings will be at the Monsoon Gallery in Bethlehem, PA. It's a beautiful gallery with a collection of eclectic artwork -- all available to the lucky person who brings it home ! The 'In Bloom' exhibition runs from May 2nd through July 9th. So, if you happen to in Bethlehem, especially during a First Friday event, why not stop in !

I don't paint florals very often, so this was an intriguing challenge. And, with the offer of an exhibition this July in Antibes, France, who could resist painting the ubiquitous flower of the Southern France region -- the beautiful Sunflower.

Red Apple 6

Red Apple 6

Obviously, the red apple is one of my favorite things to paint. It would be nice to walk into someone's home, enter their kitchen ... and see hanging on the wall or soffit, a row of red Apple paintings ! Many kitchens are somewhat neutral in color .... so what better than to add a splash of color -- or many colors !!

Apples: they have wonderful symbolism, they're healthy and taste good AND they have beautiful shape and color.

Red Apple 5

Red Apple 5

This shipping problem of my paintings to Antibes is still ongoing ... but, I thought ... maybe back to the basics. Go back to how I shipped paintings to our beautiful sister city 'Schwaebisch Gmuend, Germany'. For one exhibition I shipped paintings, for another I just simply rolled them up, packed them in a box with a strap and checked them on the plane. No worries !

However, this exhibition is a little trickier. I need to know WHEN they will arrive in Antibes, France ... and HOW does someone determine when they will arrive ... when the paintings will go on a plane, then customs -- and WHO knows how long THAT could take ...

Maybe I need to consult the magic eight ball. Eeesh! Shouldn't this process be easier? It's the greatest opportunity for me ... but, I've never felt more stress ... financially ... artistically ... and even leaving my responsibilities for five weeks -- WHERE are the answers and WHO could tell me that all will be ok-

Go ! Stay ! ... Celebrate art ... Connect ... NO worries ... Worries ...

Banana and the Apple Core

Banana and the Apple Core

The Banana

The Banana has finally arrived at the party -
The Birds were too early, the Turtles were tardy.
The Squirrels brought the nuts and the Grapes brought the wine,
The Goats brought the cheese -- The weather's divine!

The Lemons and Limes were mixing the drinks.
Parcheesi and Scrabble and Tiddly Winks
Were playing their games and sipping Champagne -
The Banana was flirting all night with Plantain.

The Squares were all dancing with Dosies and Does
The Apples were bobbing, the Thorn and the Rose
Sparked a budding romance, but it's now getting late -
The Cuckoo has chirped 'It's the end of the date'.

The Full Moon is yawning, the Clock chimed 'good-night'.
The Snails bid 'Adieu' and the Geese were in flight.
The Rooster and Hen were asleep at the wheel -
The Banana had split and left only its peel.

Composed by: Ann Elizabeth Schlegel

My studio is located on the second floor of the Banana Factory. It's really quite the amazing place ! If you're ever in the Lehigh Valley, PA area on the first Friday of a month, why not stop in. We have open house from 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. It's a great time.

I painted this Banana with the intention of donating it to the fundraising efforts benefitting our Community Public Radio station WDIY. It's an awesome radio station -- real local flavor -- and we have LOTS of local talent -- Google ' Godfrey Daniels ' and just see for yourself. They also have National Public Radio segments including Click and Clack the Tappet Brothers on Tuesday evenings and Saturday mornings ... NPR Morning Edition, NPR's Day to Day, and NPRs All Things Considered ... just to name a few.

I'm so glad to donate a painting for their fundraising benefit -- so ... bid early, bid often to secure the listening pleasure of our own Community Public Radio Station:

Core of the Apple 2

Core of the Apple 2 • this painting is sold

Gosh .... Shouldn't it be easier to live life being an artist ? I know throughout the centuries artists have struggled to survive - bearing all of the uncertainties of life just to create their art for a living. I remember visiting Giverny and seeing how beautiful Claude Monet's home was and how exquisite the gardens and lily pond were. But, I know before he made it 'big' there were countless letters pleading with more financially fortunate persons to purchase his paintings.

It's always 'O Fortuna' ... the fortune of life. I have wonderful opportunities with exhibitions in Germany and now in Antibes Juan-les-Pins .... but then with a turn of the page, it's hard to find two nickels to rub together. The rich life without the riches.

I heard a very wise man once say 'Buy from the living artists now ... for the living artists of today are the dead artists of tomorrow' ... Ouch ...

The Core of the Apple

The Core of the Apple

Getting to the Core ...

What a wonderful First Friday it was. My friend Kevin is an accomplished fiddle player -- so, he and his band of merry men called 'Murphy's Tenants' graced us with live Celtic music on the second floor at the Banana Factory -- and let me tell you - it was just great !! It was a wonderful 'people watching' time for me ... I'd see visitors meandering down the hallway somewhat pensive -- and as soon as they were passing the live Celtic music, they acquired a spring in their step and bobbed their heads back and forth. It happened every time and was quite amusing to see. Gosh ... what an impact great music has on the soul.

I've been stressing about the details of shipping paintings to my exhibition in Antibes ... but, when I heard the Celtic music, all my worries were lightened and my spirit felt hopeful ... Thanks Kev !

Green Apple 1

Green Apple 1

Ahhh .... the apple. What could be more simple in life. They're delicious, easily accessible and easy on the budget.

They have seductive properties as demonstrated with the temptation of Adam. The larynx in the human throat has been called Adam's apple because of a notion that it was caused by the forbidden fruit sticking in the throat of Adam.

Apples are iconic in the scholastic fields. Who doesn't recall the symbol of education featuring a yellow ruler and a red apple sitting proudly atop a school book.

An old proverb attests to the health benefits of the fruit: "An apple a day keeps the doctor away." Research suggests that apples may reduce the risk of colon cancer, prostate cancer and lung cancer. Like many fruits, apples contain Vitamin C as well as a host of other antioxidant compounds, which may reduce the risk of cancer by preventing DNA damage. The fiber content may thus reduce the risk of colon cancer. They may also help with heart disease, weight loss and controlling cholesterol.

Oh ... and they're delicious.

Eat smart. For what is more alluring and healthy than eating an Apple.
