I'll keep you posted for the date of my Antibes slide presentation at the Banana Factory. Until then ... Saisir le jour.

Don't Eat the Heads • the Antibes Paintings

Don't Eat the Heads • the Antibes Paintings

Here is the first completed painting of the 'Antibes' series. This painting is an acrylic painting measuring 30" x 30" on a stretched canvas. It's from a moment at the Transat Restaurant in Antibes - we were served fish - naturally with their heads still attached. The gentleman on my right was kind enough to inform me 'don't eat the heads'.

This series will be featured in the main hall at the Banana Factory in December, 2008.

$1200.00

Mezzetta Roasted Peppers

Mezzetta Roasted Peppers • this painting is sold

Finally got my new rechargeable batteries ... sorry for the image delay !

AND ... I had a HUGE breakthrough today ... a painting breakthrough. I've been a bit paralyzed since the passing away of my Mother and then my Father ... but today ... I felt that I painted something worthwhile ... three 30" x 30" acrylic paintings of 'Antibes'. I'll post them when I can ... but, for the first time in a loooong time, I feel that I've learned something ... BUT ... who knows WHAT I'll see tomorrow when I look at them with 'fresh' eyes ...

Happy to be happy again --

Sushi

Sushi

Now I painted this painting in my studio -- and also the 'Tofu' from yesterday. I ate the Sushi which was wonderful -- and then took home the tofu to see what I could do with it. I brought the heat up on my Mother's iron skillet, drizzled in some olive oil -- added the tofu ... then herbs d'Provence, grape tomatoes and sliced yellow onions. I don't know ... I just wasn't crazy about tofu. It was a little bit 'lardy' with the texture -- and not surprising because it's essentially bean lard ... but for now I'd prefer a veggie burger ... or more sushi !!!

Tofu - Tofu Steak

Tofu • this painting is sold

Tofu, also Tōfu or bean curd (the literal translation), is a food of Chinese origin, made by coagulating soy milk, and then pressing the resulting curds into blocks. There are many different varieties of tofu, including fresh tofu and tofu that has been processed in some way. Tofu has very little flavor or smell on its own, so it can be used either in savory or sweet dishes, and is often seasoned or marinated to suit the dish.

Tofu is an excellent plant-based protein source with virtually no cholesterol and less than a gram of fat per ounce. Not all fats are created equal; the majority of fat in tofu is unsaturated which is considered a "good fat" that does not harm blood vessels, whereas animal protein contains cholesterol and a higher level of unhealthy saturated fat.

Isoflavones, found in high concentrations in soybeans, are compounds that have been attributed to helping reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke and breast cancer, as well as osteoporosis and post-menopausal symptoms.

Just a little funny story ... this Tofu is for a woman who has purchased some art from me in the past. She likes Tofu, her husband likes Spam -- of ALL things !!! She came home one night to find him cooking 'Spam Parmesan' for their children ... now that's inventive !

Violin Scoll V

Violin Scroll V

It was a beautiful day today in the Lehigh Valley. I took my 4ish mile walk around Trexler Park, listened to my French lessons on my very cool 80gb iPod, then drove to my studio for a painting day. I sold seven prints today and a few little Painting Each Day paintings so it was a GREAT art day for me ... but even better than that were the visitors that came by my studio.

A lovely couple from the southern area of Ohio and their nephew (from Bethlehem) -- she's a paper artist who makes her own paper -- well, I just love talking about Europe and, low and behold, they were world travelers. It's was really great for me sharing stories and I certainly felt a lovely kindred spirit with them. That's the beauty of being in your studio, painting certainly, but also the wonderful comaraderie that can happen ....

The Red Violin - my violin

The Red Violin - my violin

Today I listened to the moving soundtrack of 'The Red Violin' in my studio. Mmmm ... John Corigliano mastered an unparalleled composition for violin. I was fortunate to hear his work of art played on the 'real' red violin - the 'Red Mendelssohn (1720), which is currently played by Elizabeth Pitcairn, whose grandfather purchased it for her 16th birthday. A worthy investment of $1.7 million at auction at Christie's London.

Elizabeth Pitcairn is one of the few soloists who performs the
Red Violin Chaconne composed for the film by John Corigliano. The notion that the violin is red because it is painted with the blood of the maker's wife, who died during childbirth, is a creation of the filmmaker and is unsubstantiated. It is called "The Red Mendelssohn" because of a unique red stripe on its top right side, but how the stripe came about is unknown.

I was a very fortunate artist to have an exhibition of my music paintings during one of Elizabeth Pitcairn's concerts ... and when the doors opened to the beautiful Symphony Concert Hall, you were face to face with my
painting 'The Red Violin'. This painting now lives in the splendid Cote d'Azur in Antibes Juan-les-Pins.

Thank you Kevin for taking such good care of my violin -- the strings are beautiful and I hope to make them sing one day ....

America on Wheels

Well, although I don't have an entry for today, I did paint ALL day. I'm still painting the vents at America on Wheels. They should be done with one more full day -- and then touch ups when they're installed on the wall.

I also practiced my French for 6 1/2 hours ...

au cas où j'ai l'occasion de peindre en France un jour ...
(that's probably not even correct ...)

Sunflower V

Sunflower V

Actually, Sunflowers may even be more beautiful in their 'prime' of life ... or near the end of it.

I watched yet another Hugh Grant film today with Gretel ... Notting Hill ... I've only seen bits of it here and there ... and today it was on so I grabbed the opportunity to see the film in full. Then, took a five mile walk/run. I used to run 8 miles a day when I lived in Cape May ... and now want to get back in that same shape - or at least similar ... so ... waiting for my iPod to enjoy while I walk/run and hopefully learn more French and listen to soulful music ...

Yesterday my Uncle - who was my Godfather - passed away.
So much sadness in the last two years ...

Sunflower IV

Sunflower IV

Tonight, after a day painting in my studio, I will stop to purchase some fish and vegetables .... and cook dinner with Gretel, my Father's cat. Like me, she is lonesome since the passing of my Dad ... and it is comforting for me to spend the evening with her ... cooking, hugging and kissing her .. and probably watching 'Love Actually' for the nth time ....

Animals feel as humans feel ... grief is grief. And comfort is comfort.

Love Actually

If you haven't yet seen the film 'Love Actually' I highly recommend that you do. Not only once, but over and over again. It's deep. And if you're like me, you'll recognize yourself in several of the characters.

I can't stop playing Dido's 'Here with me' in my studio at the Banana Factory. The music plays in the background in the movie - when Mark endures the agony of unrequited love.

The other painful moment is when Karen - played by Emma Thompson - realizes the gold heart necklace was not for her. 'Both sides now' rereleased by Joni Mitchell is playing. .... to me, Emma Thompson is the greatest actress of our time.

Love is all you need

Dear Mom and Dad -- Happy 60th wedding anniversary -
... I hope it's 'Heavenly' ...

Ah Sunflower by William Blake

Ah Sunflower, weary of time,
Who countest the steps of the sun;
Seeking after that sweet golden clime
Where the traveller's journey is done;

Where the youth pined away with desire,
And the pale virgin shrouded in snow,
Arise from their graves, and aspire
Where my Sunflower wishes to go!

Sunflower

Sunflower • this painting is sold

The sunflower is native to the Americas. The evidence thus far is that the sunflower was first domesticated in Mexico, by at least 2600 BC. It may have been domesticated a second time in the middle Mississippi Valley, or been introduced there from Mexico at an early date, as corn (maize) was. The earliest known examples of a fully domesticated sunflower north of Mexico have been found in Tennessee and date to around 2300 BC. Many indigenous American peoples used the sunflower as the symbol of the sun deity, including the Aztecs and the Otomi of Mexico and the Incas in South America. Gold images of the flower, as well as seeds, were taken back to Spain early in the 16th century. Some researchers argue that the Spaniards tried to suppress cultivation of the sunflower because of its association with solar religion and warfare.

During the 18th Century, the use of sunflower oil became very popular in Europe, particularly with members of the Russian Orthodox Church because sunflower oil was one of the few oils that was not prohibited during Lent.

Lemon

Lemon

Well, just getting back from the long drive from the Hudson Valley Wine Festival ... It takes about 2 hours and 47 minutes according to Mapquest ... but, if you just happen to stop in Kingston for a bit to eat, it can then take almost 4 hours. That's a lot of driving when you're by yourself ... and there's nothing good on the cd-less radio.

The festival was lovely -- even considering Hurricane Hannah. I'd bet there were about 13 thousand visitors .... and yesterday was absolutely beautiful !! If you'd like to order an 'official' Hudson Valley Wine Festival print, just go to www.wineracks.com. I'm very happy with this print ... and was very much influenced by my time spent in the beautiful south of France -- which I miss every day by the way ...

Lemon

Yes, I know ... there's no painting of a lemon. The reason is that I forgot to bring it home from my beautiful studio at the Banana Factory. Tomorrow I will post it for sure. How's that for a 'Lemon' head !!

Also tomorrow, I will pack my car in anticipation for the HUDSON VALLEY WINE & FOOD FESTIVAL which takes place from September 5th to the 7th. GOURMET MAGAZINE is the main sponsor so it's SURE to be a great event !!!! Also, I designed the poster .... which I am signing just in case you need to take one home with you.

Also, today I finished the first installment of my painting project at AMERICA ON WHEELS. I'm painting three 'vents' to blend in with a backdrop of the Northeast Extension of the PA turnpike. It's a beautiful lofty space - very industrial - that I'm painting in ... and I have my 'Learn French' cds playing ... so, hopefully I'll be fluent by the time I'm done.

Pink Grapes III

Pink Grapes II

from 'A case of you' ...

“I remember that time you told me, you said
"Love is touching souls."
Surely you touched mine
'Cause part of you pours out of me
In these lines from time to time.
You're in my blood like holy wine,
You taste so bitter and so sweet.”
